How Phase Change Materials Work

The term “phase change material” (PCM) is used to describe materials that undergo a phase change transition from solid to liquid and liquid to solid to absorb or release large amounts of latent heat at relatively constant temperature.
 
    Through this natural process, using phase change technology in our ThermaCool® wall and ceiling products will give both thermal mass to lightweight structures and also significantly reduce the energy demand of climate control systems.
 
By removing the peaks and troughs in temperature changes that are given by air conditioning systems, phase change materials manage the internal temperatures more effectively to provide a comfortable working temperature throughout the day.    
Incorporating phase change materials into a project is just one part of a total system approach whereby the design of a ventilation solution and purging strategy is vital to optimise the benefit of PCMs.
